Keep an eye on your inbox. Of course what I was seeing could have just been the cold meds. But through all the dismemberment and my (somewhat morbidly delighted) disgust, I started to realize that there was something else going on between the lines in Misery with regards to Paul and his work. I flinched, I cringed, I tried to read while simultaneously not looking at the page (which doesn’t work very well). Don’t get me wrong, Misery is terrifying. The thing that struck me most about Misery was that the book was as much about writing and the writing process as it was about the horror of Paul’s predicament. ![]() Armed with orange juice, tissues, and a veritable armory of cold meds, I devoured King’s 1987 novel about obsession, madness, and the horrors of writing. It was during the Popular Culture Association conference in April, and I was stuck in bed in my hotel room (which was charmingly located above the entrance to the parking garage) down for the count with the conference crud. I read Stephen King’s Misery for the first time this year. ![]() ![]() ![]() When he turns up dead in the Beaumont townhouse, a quiet investigation is initiated by government officials, who fear the fallout from Francis’s numerous blackmail and extortion schemes could do irreversible damage to the ranks of statesmen and aristocrats alike. Once the hero who had rescued and wed the orphaned, 17-year-old Leila, Francis’s hedonistic lifestyle and complete amorality have weakened his body and garnered him legions of enemies. Leila Beaumont is a talented portrait painter residing in London with her profligate husband, Francis. Such is Loretta Chase’s Captives of the Night, where an interesting mystery, two fascinating protagonists, complex interrelationships and escalating sexual and emotional tension combine to intrigue, entertain and engage. But the books I cling to most zealously are ones I consider works of art, sheer perfection holistically or when consumed in bite-sized portions. Those in the first category have some element(s) which resonated with me upon first reading, and while I don’t necessarily re-read them from cover to cover, I have favorite scenes I like to revisit once in awhile. ![]() For me, there are keepers, then there are keepers. ![]() ![]() Rulfo, like many other Latin American writers of his time, greatly admired his American predecessor, but he went a step further to create the atemporal perspective of "wandering souls" whose raw emotions he conveys in strong visual images. Behind the realistic, clearly Mexican topo-graphic, social, and cultural elements, however, a strong mythical reality imbues Rulfo's unique world, recalling William Faulkner's phantasmagoric landscape. ![]() The stories of The Burning Plain fall into the category of regionalism, a prominent subgenre in twentieth-century Latin American literature. "Talpa," a tale of adultery, death, and remorse, is an integral part of Rulfo's Dantesque scheme. ![]() Like his landmark novel Pedro Páramo (1955), the 1953 story collection The Burning Plain and Other Stories ( El llano en llamas) depicts characters doomed to roam an arid landscape while bearing the weight of their sins. ![]() A segment of a distinguished but small literary production, the story "Talpa" contains many elements that characterize the fiction of the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo. ![]() 6/24/2023 0 Comments Thinking fast and slow review![]() ![]() ![]() It helps you exert self-control and deliberately focus your attention. System 2 is very conscious, aware and considerate. Not having to think before jumping away from a car when it honks at you is quite useful, don’t you think? System 1 is a remnant from our past, and it’s crucial to our survival. Accordingly, most of the positive attributes of Protectors are based on negative human aging effects: swollen joints, decreased muscle-fat ratio, weakening heart, invariant diet, decreasing height, facial atrophy, leathery skin, hair loss, lack of sex drive, and tooth loss are all turned to advantage during the shift from Breeder to Protector. Niven has written that he invented the Protectors as a thought experiment to explain the common effects of aging on humans and to create a fictional evolutionary explanation for humans' long lives after females have passed reproductive age.
